India

It is difficult to describe the sensory experience here. I go to take a picture and think that the visual is so inadequate. Without the smells and sounds the full impact isn’t there. Someone described a recent street scene as like schools of fish on a barrier reef. The “schools”, people on foot, on bicycles, auto and bicycle rickshaws, bullock carts, cars, motorcycles, trucks, buses, dogs, cows, horses; all at a major intersection of a busy city. The movement is unconscious. Subtle cues are read, unexpressed threats communicated, intimidation, acquiescence, size and speed and attention, and perceived status all flow into the mix. I expect to see traumatic collisions, but there are none.
